Dreams must end, eventually.

At every turn of the month, Reverein usually finds itself with a few less dreamwalkers. This time, as time moves into not only a new month but a new year, as the festivities of winter give way to a bitter cold, it finds itself with one less druid.

Surely, it is strange to sleep within a dream. To dream within a dream. To wake within a dream. But within this same dream, Ori has made a new life for herself, sleeping and dreaming and waking within dreams. Filling her days with wooded wanderings, tending grapevines, befriending fellow dreamers, helping out at every chance she gets. Filling cold nights with warm whispers and words and early mornings with softness.

But dreams must end, eventually.

She knows that they lack the answers to the questions they all ask at every turn: what happens when they leave this dream? Is there hope of finding their far-flung friends again, outside of this dream? Of keeping - beyond a fleeting feeling - the precious bonds and memories they made in this dream?

And she knows how much it hurts when someone wakes without ceremony. Remembers what it had been like to wake up without a person who so resembled the sun in her eyes that the night seemed endless for a while. Thoma. Remembers that feeling of looking forward to seeing a friend again, only to find their homes empty, their names erased from her journal. Hilda, Balthus, Aerith. And those whom she met, who awoke before she could truly get to know them.

How much it will hurt if she were to wake one day, for those she leaves behind.

And so in the days when time feels abundant, she goes to the woods. There is a tree that she has quite taken to teleporting through in the time she has been here. Anyone whom she’s taken to the forest using her magic, she has taken to this very place. It’s also a tree that she’s quite befriended after many quick conversations, many expressions of ”Thanks for letting me teleport through you.” And each time that she goes, dreamotion fills the place - and seeps into the land as Ori kneels in the flowers and casts a spell to protect this very place. Over time, the grove springs into life.

And over time, Ori writes letters to her dearest friends. She has done this sort of thing before - at home, when she knew they were going to face her sister, when she knew she would do whatever it took to save her even if she would trade her own life for her sister’s happiness. Blessedly, the circumstances are less dire this time around, but nevertheless bittersweet.

She leaves the letters - leaves of parchment sealed into envelopes - along with all six of her remaining wishing well baubles within the hollow of a great willow tree within her grove.

And when the time comes, when her dream must end, the creatures whom she’s befriended in the forest will each make their way to her friends and try to guide them to this place. This place where, even in the bitterness of the cold winter that has fallen on Reverein, there is warmth and life and color.

[ The letter is long, and various splotches all over the pieces of parchment where the ink has blotted or the paper has contracted suggests that they these spots have been dampened… ]

To my most beloved moonlight, Diluc,
I am sorry that we couldn’t keep our promise. I know that when you read this letter, I will be gone. And that you will be hurting so very much, and I will no longer be there to tell you that everything will be okay.

But… If I am gone, and you are reading this letter, then that also means that you found my grove! I’ve been working on it with my magic and with dreamotion for quite some time, in secret… Do you remember? This is where I always teleport us to whenever we go to the woods. Where my favorite tree is. Whenever you are hurt, or lonely, or in despair, I hope that you come to this place. The trees here are all of my friends, and I know they’ll be your friends, too. They’ll keep you company when I cannot, anymore. And this place will heal you when I cannot, anymore.

But please don’t be too sad, okay? I know it’s silly to say, because I’m sad while writing this letter, but I know you’ll feel bitter and angry and sad and you’ll pretend to be fine even when you’re not. Please just think about all of the wonderful times we had together, moon of mine. Don’t try to forget or keep everything to yourself. You have to remember, for the both of us. And you have to share those feelings with everyone. Because if you remember, and if you share, then in a way I am still with you.

And I will always be with you, in your heart, in the stars, and in the magic of this grove!

Thank you for having loved me as fiercely as you have. And for letting me love you as fiercely in return. You were every bit deserving of every single ounce of affection that I’ve given you all this time, and I hope with all of my heart that you will remember that.

And this, too. These words were when I realized I was truly in love with you:

”You’re stronger than you believe you are. Have faith. Dawn will break soon.”

When dawn breaks in this dreaming world, I hope that you and I and Thoma will find each other again. I know that when I wake up, I’ll carry both of you and your love with me. I know that I’ll remember that I had the most beautiful dream and I know that one day, I’ll remember and I’ll do everything I can to be strong enough to find you both again.

But until then… Don’t forget to eat, and rest, and to take care of yourself. Don’t give in to the nightmare.

And please, don’t forget that I love you, and that I will always be with you.

Dearest Trahearne,
Thank you. When I think of what I’d like to make sure I tell you if I were ever to leave, those are the words that come to mind. The spirits have blessed me with the chance to meet someone so remarkable, from somewhere so far away! Thank you for teaching me so much about yourself, your people, and your world. Thank you for keeping me company on long treks through the woods. Thank you for sharing with me the things that you maybe have not shared before. I’m very grateful.

I’m sorry that I will no longer be around to do those things. But please know that no matter what, I was better for having known you and to have thought of you like a brother. I think Valphi would have liked you, too.

But who knows? Maybe someday, you and Eustace and Tifa and everyone will unlock the secrets of this dream realm and we’ll see each other again. I think my friends in the Alchemighty would be more than happy to welcome you into our world! In fact, I think Dae would be absolutely enthused to be able to say that our team has somebody from another world in it!

I also hope that when you read this letter, you do not lose hope. Just because I’ve woken up doesn’t mean that there won’t be new dreamers who may come and have the honor of knowing you. Please don’t give up on this realm and on forming these kinds of bonds. In a way, I’ll keep being around that way!

I hope this all makes sense… I’m not as eloquent as you or Beatrix…

Please don’t forget to take care of yourself, okay? Take breaks to go on walks… If Diluc is still there, too, please check on him… If not, please take care of my plants! And my grove, too.

Take heart, dear brother. We’ll see each other again someday.

Dearest Eustace & Tifa,
Congratulations on your marriage! I’m so, so happy for you both. I know that I’ve said this many times, and I tried to say this during my toast at your reception, but…

I think that you both represent the meaning of this dream. We might not ever truly know the nature of our presence here or understand how to stay, but I think you two, and your bond, and everything you’ve overcome are an inspiration to us all. Dreams can be fleeting, but they can be powerful, too. I know this because of meeting and getting to know you both. I’m grateful for the friendship that each of you has given me all of this time, and I’m so proud to see you two chase your happiness. I really do think of you both like family.

Unfortunately, that you’re reading this likely means that I’ve woken up from this realm. I hope that it’s okay if I ask you both to make sure everyone else is okay, too. You know better than anyone else the pain of loss and having to overcome the nightmares that follow. I don’t want anyone to turn because of this. So if Diluc is still here, too…

Please, don’t let him turn.

I did my best to make sure this grove would stay even if I go. I poured a lot of my magic and dreamotion into it over time. I don’t know if it will work. But I hope that if nothing else, even if it doesn’t heal you like I meant for it to, that it’ll become a special place for people to find in the woods when they’re feeling lost.

Don’t worry about me. I know that when I wake up I’ll feel so rested and happy that I had such a wonderful dream, even if I won’t remember it. That truly is enough for me. And if one day, you two uncover the truth and find a way to connect our worlds through these dreams, then… I’ll be waiting with a smile and a bag of treats for everyone!

Please give everyone in your fuzzy family a warm hug from me.

My dearest General Beatrix,
Please forgive me if this letter isn’t very… eloquent, or coherent. You’ll have to forgive me, too, because you reading this letter means I’ll have left this dream world.

But please don’t worry about me! I’ve been told, many times, that I’m stronger than I give myself credit for. I would like for you to believe this, too.

And I would also like for you to believe in yourself as well. We all have regrets, and things that we don’t like about ourselves, things that we don’t think we deserve because of that. I would like to hope that over the time we’ve known each other, I’ve managed to make you believe in yourself and your worthiness a little bit more. And if not… I’ll have to do my best to remember this dream, so that I can come back and make sure that you do.

Please look out for everyone for me. Not only Diluc, if he’s still here, but Trahearne, Eustace, Tifa, everyone… I know that you can protect them from the nightmares. Protecting is what you do best, after all. I always felt so safe around you, so I know this to be true.

If you or anyone else ever find yourselves feeing lost, or hurt, or in despair… Please come to this grove. I hope that it will help with those feelings, and I hope that it’ll feel like I’m still there, even when I’ve gone.

I hope that you find your own form of happiness here. Like Eustace and Tifa have, and like I had with Diluc. But please remember that happiness looks different for everyone, too. Please don’t feel like you have to act a certain way for Dohalim… He loves you for who you are, and the relationship that you two have is between the two of you. I sincerely hope that you two carve out your own joy in this world and that you treasure it deeply with no regrets.

Since I don’t know when exactly these letters would be read… Please forgive me if I’ve accidentally written anything upsetting!

Above all else, thank you for being my friend in this dream.

Dearest Susato,
If you are reading this letter, then that means I must have woken up. It might not be fair of me to ask this of you, but I’ll be relying on you to make sure that nobody loses heart in the wake of this, okay? I know you can do it, Susato. I’ve always thought you to be a wonderful, strong young woman, after all.

Please don’t be too sad that I’ve gone. Or that I might not remember. I know that even when I’ve woken up, I’ll have had the most wonderful dream, and because of that I know that I’ll carry you all with me even as I keep on at home.

Maybe we’ll all find each other again. But until then, please don’t forget to take care of yourself while taking care of everyone else too, alright? Truthfully, I’ve often seen my younger self in you, and sometimes I’ve worried if you have too much on your plate and if you’re going to be alright… But I’ve also often seen that you are much, much stronger than I ever was at your age, and that gives me hope that you’re going to blossom into such a remarkable young lady! I just know that everyone here is proud of you.

This grove is meant to be a safe haven in the Wildlands. If you’re ever out here and find yourself in need of assistance, please come here. I hope it helps.

Dear Beat,
I know that you’re probably not used to reading letters like this, but I hope you’ll take the time to read this, anyway!

I really admire all of your energy! I truly do. I remember being very worried about you that night at the cliffs, but… You proved yourself to be a steadfast young man, and I know that even though I’ve gone, you’ll stay strong and make sure everyone else stays in tip-top spirits, too! I am counting on you to help make sure you’re all doing okay.

And please give the dogs some extra love on my behalf, since I’ll no longer be able to shower them with affection myself.

I hope this grove will be helpful to you and everyone else as you keep dreaming. Just remember that it’s there if you ever feel lost or hurt…

I hope that you’ll forgive me if I am leaving your dear friend heartbroken, too.

You know even better than I do how he is. If he’s still here, please don’t let him fall into despair. Please don’t let him believe that he doesn’t deserve goodness and grace in his life. I can’t bear the thought of him letting his darkness overtake him. Please do what you do best, and fill his and everyone’s hearts with beautiful words and songs to heal their hearts. I hope it’s okay if I ask that of you.

I also hope that maybe, one day, our paths will cross over worlds and realms again. When that happens, I hope we’ll be able to sing and dance and drink together, more than ever before. I’m looking forward to it.

I am so glad that I had the chance to meet “The Traveler!” Back when Thoma was here, I would sometimes listen to him and Diluc talk about your sister… But to my understanding, you two are quite similarly incredible! I know that even though they knew your sister, they both still treasure you in their own ways. Diluc especially, since he’s had more time to get to know you here.

That time we met by the fire… Back then, you had just arrived to this realm of dreams, yet while we sat together to talk and get to know each other, I felt more and more like you were the one making me feel welcomed and safe.

You are an incredibly special person, Aether. Whenever I spend time with you, I see more and more why so many different people from Teyvat hold you so dearly. I hope you never forget that you are loved!

Even though I’ve woken up now, I hope it’s okay if I trust you with making sure that everyone is okay… if Diluc is still there, then especially him, please… But I think most of all, I’m looking forward to the day that I can meet you and everyone again.

If you’ve been given this letter, that means that I’ve woken up from this realm… I regret that we didn’t have time to get to know each other better, but please know this: I am so glad that you’re here.

If Diluc is still here, and if you have any love left for your brother, I hope that you two will be able to connect here in a way that you maybe couldn’t at home. And that you will be there for him. Please do not let him destroy himself in his grief and sorrow. And don’t let him think that he doesn’t deserve kindness and love. I think you and I both know that isn’t true… for either of you.

And if Diluc is still here, he might be upset that I’m telling you that I knew about your position… But I just want you to know, especially after having been in your dream, that while I don’t know the full story of your homeland and what you must do, I do know that you bear a great burden upon your shoulders, and I hope you find it in your heart to share that burden instead of keeping it all to yourself…

My sister and I were estranged once, too, and on opposite sides of a conflict. But we managed to weather the storm, and I know that you two will, too.

I hope that this letter finds you in good health and spirits! I'm sorry to say that if you're reading this, that means I've woken up from this dreaming world... But please, don't worry about me! I'll wake up with the feeling of having the most wonderful, magical dream, and I know that I'll be thankful for it, even if I might not remember everything in the waking world.

I'd like for you to know that I've cast magic upon this grove. I hope that it will help anyone who feels lost in the Wildlands, or - spirits forbid - anyone who is in danger. It should at the very least help with any injuries... If another druid appears, or if someone manages to replicate my spells with dreamotion, then I would also recommend using the big trees in this grove as as a teleportation conduit.

I hope that your find your own happiness in this dream, just like I did. Until we meet again, please take care!
